Noelle, played by Anna Kendrick, is the daughter of Santa Claus and has grown up in the North Pole, learning everything about Christmas and the family business. However, when her father, now an aging Santa Claus, announces his retirement and that Noelle's younger brother, Nick (Bill Hader), will take over the reins as the new Santa, Noelle is ecstatic for her brother, who has always shown excitement for taking up the mantle, even though he is not as great at the job.

As Noelle and Jake search for Nick, they encounter different aspects of the Christmas spirit and tradition, including working in a department store's Christmas section and volunteering at a homeless shelter. As Christmas approaches and Santa is still nowhere to be found, Noelle realizes that Christmas might be in danger if her brother doesn't return, so she decides it's up to her to save the holiday.
