In Nine Months, Samuel Faulkner (Hugh Grant) is a child psychiatrist who has always been hesitant to commit to a serious relationship. He's been dating his girlfriend, Rebecca Taylor (Julianne Moore), for five years when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Samuel is freaked out and doesn't know if he's ready to be a father. He confides in his best friend, a womanizer named Sean (Tom Arnold), and his own therapist, Dr. Kosevich (Robin Williams), who is dealing with his own marital issues.
As Rebecca's due date approaches, Samuel tries to keep his cool while dealing with her overbearing family and his own fears of being a father. He even contemplates leaving Rebecca and starting a new life with a younger, carefree woman, but ultimately realizes that Rebecca and the baby are what he truly wants.
Throughout the film, Samuel has a contentious relationship with Rebecca's obstetrician, Dr. Kosevich, who is always trying to give him unwanted advice and meddling in his personal life. However, by the end of the film, Samuel has come to appreciate Dr. Kosevich's friendship and guidance.
