Nim Rusoe is a young girl who lives on an isolated island in the South Pacific with her father, Jack, a marine biologist. Nim spends her days exploring the island's lush jungle and pristine beaches, and communicating with her animal friends, including a sea lion named Selkie.
Nim's only connection to the outside world is through her favorite book, which she believes was written by the reclusive author, Alexandra Rover. When Nim's father goes missing while on a research expedition, Nim reaches out to Alexandra for help, not realizing that the author is actually a germaphobic agoraphobe who rarely leaves her apartment in San Francisco.
Despite her fears and anxieties, Alexandra is compelled to help Nim, and sets out on a harrowing journey to the island, with the help of her literary alter-ego, the adventurous Alex Rover. As Nim and Alexandra struggle to rescue Jack from a group of pirates who have captured him, they learn to overcome their fears and work together as a team.
