The two UCLA coeds, Julia and Susanne, are on their way to a music festival in North Carolina when their car breaks down in a small town called Badham County. They seek the help of the local sheriff, who seems helpful at first but starts making advances towards them. When they reject his advances, he arranges for them to be arrested on trumped-up charges of drug possession.
The local judge, who is the sheriff's cousin, sentences them to a month in the women's prison. The prison is run by sadistic administrators and corrupt guards who subject the inmates to brutal and degrading treatment, including sexual assault and forced labor.
Julia and Susanne are initially shocked and terrified by the horrors they face in the prison, but they soon bond with their fellow inmates and vow to fight back against the abuse. They organize a hunger strike and other acts of resistance, but the guards respond with even more brutality.
The situation comes to a head when Julia and Susanne learn of a plan to transfer them to a maximum-security prison, where they fear they will be killed. They team up with their new friends to stage a daring escape, facing danger and obstacles at every turn as they try to make their way to safety.
In the end, the girls manage to escape and expose the corruption and abuse at the prison, with the help of a sympathetic local reporter. The sheriff and his cohorts are brought to justice, and Julia and Susanne return home, forever scarred by their ordeal but proud of the strength and resilience they found in themselves and their fellow inmates.
