Raimund Gregorius is a Swiss Classical languages teacher who leads an uneventful and solitary life in Bern. One day, while on his way to work, he saves a beautiful Portuguese woman, who jumps off a bridge. She runs away, leaving behind her coat and a book by a Portuguese author called Amadeu de Prado. Raimund becomes obsessed with the book and decides to go to Portugal to find out more about the author.
In Lisbon, Raimund befriends the owner of a bookstore, who helps him in his pursuit. Raimund discovers that Amadeu de Prado was a doctor and philosopher, whose life was intertwined with the political turmoil and the romantic upheaval of Portugal in the 20th century. Amadeu's writings and life story become a passion for Raimund, who reads the author's notes and journals, interviews people who knew him, and follows his footsteps.
Raimund's pursuit of Amadeu leads him on a journey that takes him to the enigmatic Quinta das Lรกgrimas, the site of a historical battle, and to a remote mountain village, where he meets Amadeu's sister and former lover. Raimund starts to question his own life and finds himself drawn to the passionate and courageous people he meets, who help him to rediscover his own lost sense of purpose and meaning.
Night Train to Lisbon is a movie that explores themes of identity, memory, love, politics and the search for meaning. The movie features an all-star international cast, including Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling, and Bruno Ganz, and has a beautiful score by Annette Focks. The movie was directed by Bille August and is based on the novel by Pascal Mercier.
