Teddy Walker, played by Kevin Hart, is a smooth-talking salesman who has everything going for him – a nice car, a beautiful girlfriend, and a high-paying job. However, things take a turn for the worse when he accidentally blows up his job and loses everything he had. With no prospects in sight, Teddy decides to get his GED and find a new job.
Teddy's new challenge is to attend night school, where he meets a group of misfit students who are struggling just like him. There's Mackenzie (Anne Winters), a single mother who is trying to provide for her child; Jaylen (Romany Malco), a conspiracy theorist who can't seem to focus; Theresa (Mary Lynn Rajskub), a shy housewife who wants to learn but is intimidated by the other students; and Luis (Al Madrigal), a former gang member who is trying to turn his life around.
To make matters worse, Teddy's old high school nemesis, Stewart (Taran Killam), is now his night school teacher. Stewart has always been jealous of Teddy and takes pleasure in bullying him in front of the other students. However, Teddy finds an ally in the form of his feisty and no-nonsense teacher, Carrie (Tiffany Haddish), who doesn't think he's too bright but is determined to help him succeed.
The movie follows Teddy and his classmates as they struggle through their coursework and find ways to support each other. Along the way, Teddy faces a number of challenges, including a failed attempt at the GED exam, a disastrous public speaking engagement, and a surprise visit from his overbearing mother (Loretta Devine).
Despite these setbacks, Teddy refuses to give up and eventually earns his GED. The movie ends with Teddy and his classmates celebrating their achievement and Teddy finally finding a new job in the sales industry.
