The film opens with Jean Courtland standing on a bridge, contemplating suicide. She is stopped by her fiancé, Elliott Carson, who begins to investigate the cause of her distress. Through flashbacks, we learn that Jean's father, Howard, was a wealthy businessman who had a close relationship with a stage mentalist named John Triton. Triton had a gift for precognition, which he used in his act with Whitney Courtland, Jean's stepmother.
As Triton's powers became more pronounced, he began to have terrifying visions of disaster, which he was unable to prevent. This caused him to retreat from public life and become a recluse. In the present day, Triton warns Howard that a disaster is imminent, but he is dismissed as a madman.
Despite Howard's skepticism, the predictions of Triton begin to come true. First, a plane crash kills one of Howard's associates. Then, his son-in-law is injured in a freak accident. Finally, Howard himself is killed in a car crash. Elliott begins to believe in Triton's powers and urges him to use them to prevent further tragedy.
With Elliott's help, Triton tries to prevent Jean from being killed in an explosion at the family's mansion. Despite his efforts, Jean is killed, and Triton is left in despair. The film ends with a final vision of Triton, looking out over the city and contemplating the power of fate.
