Nebraska is a black and white comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne. The film stars Bruce Dern as Woody Grant, a cantankerous and alcoholic elderly man, who becomes convinced that he has won a million-dollar sweepstakes prize after receiving a mailer. Woody lives in Billings, Montana with his wife, Kate (June Squibb), who is equally as brash as her husband.
Woody decides to travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to claim his winnings. However, his family is convinced that the sweepstakes is just a scam and that Woody is showing signs of dementia. Woody's son, David (Will Forte), decides to take him on the road trip to Nebraska in order to keep him out of trouble. Along the journey, they make a detour to Woody's hometown of Hawthorne, Nebraska, where Woody and his family reconnect with old friends and confront past grievances.
The film captures the stark beauty of the Midwest, with sweeping shots of the countryside and seemingly endless fields of corn. It also explores themes of aging, regret, and family dysfunction. The relationship between Woody and David is at the center of the story, as they try to connect with each other despite years of disconnect.
Nebraska was critically well-received and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Dern. The film is a poignant exploration of small-town life, family dynamics, and the challenges of aging.
