Near Dark is a 1987 horror-western film directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The movie tells the story of Caleb Colton, a young man who lives on his family's farm in Oklahoma and meets a beautiful and mysterious girl named Mae while out one night. After spending some time together, Mae bites Caleb and makes him one of her kind - a vampire.
Caleb is then pulled into a group of roving vampires - led by Jesse Hooker - who traverse the highways of the American Southwest. Along with Mae, Diamondback, Severen, and Homer, Caleb learns the ways of being a vampire, including the rules of survival and the ins and outs of hunting.
The group's existence is threatened when Caleb's father and sister come looking for him, leading to a high stakes showdown. Along the way, Caleb must fight to hang on to his humanity while navigating the violent and unstable world of the undead.
The film is known for its unconventional take on the vampire genre, blending elements of horror, western, and road movie. It also features a unique soundtrack that includes contributions from Tangerine Dream and punk rock band, The Cramps. Despite its initial box office failure, Near Dark has become a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of the best vampire films ever made.
