In National Treasure: Book of Secrets, treasure hunter Benjamin Gates (portrayed by Nicolas Cage) and his team go on a new adventure to clear his family's name and search for a lost city of gold. While searching for clues, they discover a page from John Wilkes Booth's diary that suggests Gates' ancestor Thomas Gates was not involved in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln as previously believed.
The team sets out to find the lost city of gold in order to prove Thomas Gates' innocence. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and enemies, including a rival treasure hunter named Mitch Wilkinson (portrayed by Ed Harris), who is also after the lost city of gold.
As they follow the clues left in the diary, the team travels to various locations around the world, including Paris, London, and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Eventually, they uncover the true location of the lost city and find a vast treasure trove inside.
In the end, Gates is able to clear his family's name and prove that his ancestor was not involved in Lincoln's assassination. He also donates a portion of the treasure to the Smithsonian Institution, where Abigail Chase (portrayed by Diane Kruger) works as a historian.
