Clark Griswold is a loving, but slightly bumbling father who wants to give his family the perfect vacation by taking them to his dream destination, Walley World. He sets out on a cross-country road trip with his wife Ellen, teenage son Rusty, and young daughter Audrey, in a station wagon named the "Family Truckster."
Along the way, they encounter a series of mishaps and obstacles that derail their plans and test their patience. They get lost in the desert, get robbed at a seedy motel, and have a run-in with a crazy cousin. They also pick up a mysterious, attractive hitchhiker who distracts Clark from his family.
Despite these setbacks, Clark remains committed to his goal and continues to push the limits of his sanity to get to Walley World before the park closes. In the end, Clark and his family reach Walley World only to find out that it is closed for repairs. Disappointed and exhausted, they decide to break into the park and have the time of their lives.
