My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done is a 2009 thriller movie directed by Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch. The movie is loosely based on the true story of Mark Yavorsky, who murdered his own mother with a sword in San Diego.
The movie follows Brad McCullum (played by Michael Shannon), a conflicted and disturbed young man who aspires to become an actor. Brad's mental state deteriorates over time, and he becomes increasingly isolated and paranoid. Brad believes his mother is plotting against him, and he becomes convinced she is attempting to poison him.
One day, Brad snaps and murders his mother with a sword. He barricades himself inside his house and refuses to speak to anyone. The police are called to the scene, but they are unable to make any headway in negotiating with Brad.
The movie flashes back to Brad's past, revealing his strained relationships with his mother, his girlfriend, and his acting teacher. Brad's friends and neighbors recount their memories of him, providing clues as to why he might have committed such a terrible crime.
Throughout the movie, the audience is left to wonder whether Brad is truly insane or whether he is just a troubled young man who has been pushed too far. The film ends on an ambiguous note, with Brad's ultimate fate left uncertain.
