Henry Durand, played by Colin Hanks, is a workaholic FBI agent who has been assigned to monitor his mother, Marty, played by Meg Ryan. She's been dating a new man, Tommy Lucero, played by Antonio Banderas, who is suspected of being involved in a series of art thefts around the city.
Henry's boss, Director George Maddox, played by Selma Blair, warns him that if his mother and her boyfriend are guilty, he'll have to arrest them both. This puts Henry in a difficult position as he has to balance his duty as an FBI agent with his love for his mother.
As Henry starts to get to know Tommy, his investigation starts to take a surprising turn. Tommy is not who Henry thought he was, and he finds himself attracted to his mother's boyfriend. Meanwhile, Marty is trying to rekindle her relationship with Henry, who has been distant since his father died.
As the investigation continues, Henry uncovers a plot much more sinister than he anticipated, and he realizes that he has to choose between his duty and his family as he faces some difficult decisions about his future. Will he be able to solve the case without betraying his mother, or will he lose everything he holds dear?
