My Life in Ruins follows the story of Georgia (played by Nia Vardalos), a Greek woman who once loved her job as a tour guide, but has now lost her passion for it. She is struggling through a divorce and her tour bus is filled with various personalities, including a fussbudget couple, a frat boy, a newlywed couple on their honeymoon and an elderly American woman who spends most of her time complaining about her health.
Georgia's boss at the travel company has a reputation for selling cheap tours to travelers, but Georgia aims to make her tour the best one ever. However, as her group of tourists proves to be more interested in souvenir shopping and sightseeing than in truly experiencing Greece’s rich culture, Georgia grows increasingly discouraged.
As she struggles to find her kefi and reconnect with her love of her job, she begins to see the beauty of Greece from a new perspective. With the help of her bus driver, Procopi (played by Alexis Georgoulis), Georgia begins to show the tourists the hidden gems of Greece, including ancient ruins, picturesque villages and some of the nation's prized traditions.
As Georgia and the tourists explore Greece together, they encounter new experiences that challenge their comfort zones and force them to embrace new cultures. Through these adventures, Georgia and the tourists come to realize that the true magic of travel is not just about seeing new sights, but also about forging connections with new people and discovering what truly brings joy to one's life.
In the end, Georgia finally rediscovers her kefi and reignites her passion for her work as a tour guide, while her ragtag group of tourists truly come to appreciate the splendor of Greece, thanks to her guidance and the meaningful connections they’ve formed along the way.
