Ethan is a struggling writer who has just finished his novel and is hoping to get it published. His girlfriend, Caroline, is supportive but also a bit skeptical about his chances of success. On the day of his book launch, Ethan rushes to the airport to meet Caroline, who has been away on a business trip. He plans to propose to her in a grand romantic gesture, but Caroline surprises him by breaking up with him instead. In a moment of desperation, Ethan tells her that the airport scene was actually the ending of his novel and that he only did it to win her back.
Despite Caroline's rejection, Ethan is inspired by the idea of true love conquering all and begins to write a new story featuring a similar scenario. As he works on his book, he meets Jesse, a charming and quirky waitress at a local coffee shop. She is intrigued by Ethan's job and offers to read his manuscript. He is immediately drawn to her and they eventually start dating, but their relationship is complicated by Jesse's growing feelings for Troy, a charismatic businessman who frequents the coffee shop.
