My Fellow Americans is a 1996 comedy film directed by Peter Segal and starring Jack Lemmon and James Garner. The story follows two ex-Presidents, Russell Kramer (Lemmon) and Matt Douglas (Garner), who are bitter rivals and have not spoken to each other since they left office. However, when they find themselves framed by the current President for taking bribes, the two former foes must team up to clear their names.
As they embark on a wild cross-country adventure, dodging bullets and narrowly escaping capture, the two ex-Presidents bicker and banter while trying to find the evidence that will prove their innocence. Along the way, they encounter various characters, including a car thief (Dan Aykroyd) and a gun-toting redneck (played by country singer Travis Tritt).
Despite their differences, Kramer and Douglas gradually come to respect each other and develop a bond that transcends their political affiliations. Along the way, they also uncover a conspiracy that threatens the very foundation of American democracy.
My Fellow Americans is a hilarious and entertaining political satire that pokes fun at the foibles of the American political system. Lemmon and Garner are both excellent in their roles, delivering sharp and witty performances that showcase their comedic talents. The film also features a star-studded supporting cast, including John Heard, Wilford Brimley, and Lauren Bacall, among others.
