After Tim O'Hara (played by Jeff Daniels) gets fired from his job as a news producer for compromising his boss's daughter, he returns home feeling defeated. However, his luck changes when he witnesses the crash of a small Martian spaceship in front of him. He rushes to the crash site and finds an injured Martian named Uncle Martin (played by Christopher Lloyd).
Uncle Martin is stranded on Earth and needs to repair his spaceship in order to go home. He tells Tim that he has a gadget that can make him invisible, but he needs his spaceship back to repair it. Since Tim has taken the original but scaled-down spaceship with him, the Martian follows him to retrieve it.
Tim agrees to help Uncle Martin fix his spaceship in exchange for the exclusive story that will make him famous. However, they must keep Uncle Martin's existence a secret from the rest of the world, especially the government agency known as "NOSS" (Network for Observation of Space and Science).
Throughout the movie, Tim and Uncle Martin face a series of comical mishaps as they try to repair the spaceship and evade NOSS agents who are tracking them down. Uncle Martin also reveals his other gadgets, such as a levitation device and a mind-reading helmet.
As the two bond and work together to fix the spaceship, they also encounter a love interest for Tim in the form of Lizzie (played by Elizabeth Hurley), a TV reporter who grows suspicious of Tim's secretive behavior.
In the end, the pair successfully repair the spaceship and Uncle Martin prepares to leave Earth. However, Tim realizes that he can't let go of his new friend and sabotages the launch to keep Uncle Martin on Earth. They continue to have more adventures together, with Tim keeping Uncle Martin's existence a secret from the rest of the world.
