Vincent Gambini (played by Joe Pesci) and his girlfriend Mona Lisa Vito (played by Marisa Tomei) arrive in the fictional town of Beechum County, Alabama to help the two friends, Bill Gambini (played by Ralph Macchio) and Stan Rothenstein (played by Mitchell Whitfield), who are being held on suspicion of murder. They are accused of killing the clerk at a convenience store where they had stopped to buy snacks.
Vincent, who has never before tried a case, finds himself struggling to understand the Southern way of life, including the local dialect and customs, as well as the legal system that he is not familiar with. Despite initial setbacks, he eventually wins the case by proving the boys' innocence through various means, including proving that the tire tracks did not match the car the boys were driving and identifying the real perpetrators of the crime.
Throughout the movie, Vincent and Mona Lisa provide comic relief with their banter and quirky personalities, and the performances from the entire cast are considered some of the best in their careers. Marisa Tomei earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mona Lisa Vito.
My Cousin Vinny was well-received by audiences and critics alike and has since become a cult classic. It is often cited as one of the best legal comedies of all time and is credited with increasing interest in studying law among young people.
