Mutiny on the Buses

Comedy  United Kingdom

Mutiny on the Buses is a 1972 British comedy film directed by Harry Booth. It is the second film in the series of three films based on the British television series On the Buses. The film stars Reg Varney as Stan Butler, Doris Hare as Mum, Michael Robbins as Arthur, and Anna Karen as Suzy.

The film begins with Stan and Suzy getting engaged, much to the dismay of Mum, Arthur, and Olive. They are worried about how they will manage without Stan's income from driving buses. However, their worries soon turn to Arthur when he loses his job. In order to provide for his family, Stan suggests that Arthur learn to drive a bus and get a job at the depot.

Arthur is initially reluctant, but he eventually agrees and learns to drive a bus. Stan then blackmails the Depot Manager into giving him the job of driver on the new money-making Special Tours Bus. The plan seems to be working until the inspector takes Stan on a trial run to the Windsor Safari Park and chaos ensues.

The film features the same brand of humor as the television series, with slapstick comedy and double entendres. It also highlights the struggles of working-class families in the 1970s, with the characters worrying about money and job security.

Mutiny on the Buses was a commercial success, grossing over £1 million at the box office. It was followed by the third and final film in the series, Holiday on the Buses, the following year.
