Mute Witness is a 1994 British-German thriller film written, produced and directed by Anthony Waller. The film stars Marina Sudina as Billy, a makeup artist who has been mute since childhood, and stars Fay Ripley, Evan Richards, and Alec Guinness.
Billy travels to Moscow with her sister Kate, who is also a makeup artist, to work on a film directed by Kate's boyfriend, Andy. Billy inadvertently becomes a witness to a murder when she stumbles across the set of a snuff film, a film in which a person is actually killed on camera, and realizes that the victim is actually still alive.
Terrified and hiding in the studio, Billy sees that the film's producers are Russian mafia members who realize they must silence her. With no voice to call for help and no one to turn to, Billy must use her wits to survive as the killers close in on her.
As the Russian mafia starts to pursue Billy, she tried to piece together what happened, but no one believes her due to her being mute. She turns to her sister Kate for help, but Kate is now in a complicated situation as the police and Russian mafia are both after Billy.
Mute Witness is a tense and suspenseful thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat from beginning to end. Through clever plot twists, the film continually throws off the viewer's expectations, and the final act is genuinely surprising. The film is a truly unique masterpiece that showcases the brilliance of director Anthony Waller.
