In the movie Music and Lyrics, the washed-up singer is named Alex Fletcher (played by Hugh Grant), who was a member of a popular 80s band but has since fallen off the radar. He is given an opportunity to write a hit song for Cora Corman (played by Haley Bennett), a rising teen pop sensation, but is struggling to come up with any lyrics that will fit her style.
Alex meets Sophie Fisher (played by Drew Barrymore), a plant caretaker with a talent for words, who offers to help him write the song.
