Murphy, played by Peter O'Toole, is a merchant seaman who loses his ship to a German U-Boat in the final days of World War II. He is the only survivor, and is picked up by a British merchant ship. However, he is consumed by a burning desire for revenge against the U-Boat that killed his fellow crew members.
Murphy ends up in a small mission station in Venezuela, where he begins to plan his revenge. He meets Louis Brezan (Siân Phillips), who is the manager of the local oil company. Initially, Louis is skeptical of Murphy's plan, but eventually becomes convinced of its necessity.
Together, Murphy and Louis set about building a homemade torpedo, which they plan to use to sink the U-Boat. They encounter numerous obstacles along the way, including corrupt local officials, dangerous wildlife, and logistical challenges. Murphy becomes increasingly obsessed with his mission, neglecting his own safety and the wellbeing of those around him.
