Murder Is My Beat is a 1955 film noir directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The film begins with a burnt body being found in a fireplace and the investigation is led by Detective Lieutenant Larry Strickland (Paul Langton) and his partner Sergeant Bob Lacey (Jim Backus). They find out that the victim was Mr. Dean (Ludwig Stรถssel), a wealthy businessman who had recently hired nightclub singer Eden Lane (Barbara Payton) to perform at his party.

Eden Lane, who had a tumultuous relationship with Mr. Dean, becomes a prime suspect when her fingerprints are found at the scene. She is arrested and put on trial, but the evidence against her is circumstantial. Her defense lawyer, David Carson (John Gallaudet), who is in love with her, tries to prove her innocence.

As the trial proceeds, Eden becomes more and more desperate to clear her name. She begs Sergeant Lacey to help her find evidence that would exonerate her. While on a train to the prison, Eden sees someone who she thinks is the real killer. She escapes from the train with the help of Sergeant Lacey and they follow the supposed killer into the woods. They come across a cabin and discover that the killer is Mr. Harkness (Dick Elliott), Mr. Dean's business associate who killed him out of jealousy.

Eden is exonerated of the crime and released from prison. She reconciles with David and goes back to her singing career. The film ends with Eden performing on stage, singing "Murder Is My Beat," the eponymous theme song of the film.
