Martha Moxley was a 15-year-old girl who lived in the affluent community of Greenwich, Connecticut in the 1970s. On the evening of October 30, 1975, she attended a Halloween party at the home of the Skakel family, who were neighbors and relatives of the Kennedys. The next morning, Moxley's body was found bludgeoned to death with a golf club in the backyard of her own home.
Despite a lengthy investigation and multiple suspects, including Michael Skakel, none of whom were charged with the murder. Skakel, who was also 15 years old at the time of Moxley's murder, became a prime suspect after evidence emerged that he had been in the same area as Moxley on the night of her murder. However, no charges were filed against him until 2000, when he was finally arrested and convicted of murder.
The case remained unsolved for 25 years, until Mark Fuhrman, a former detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, began a reinvestigation in the early 2000s. Through his investigation, Fuhrman uncovered new evidence that led to Skakel's conviction in 2002.
The murder of Martha Moxley remains a chilling example of the pain and trauma that can result from crimes committed against innocent children. The story of her death and the search for her killer have become part of the history of Greenwich and have inspired deep sympathy and outrage among the community.
