The five detectives invited by Lionel Twain are parodies of famous detectives from literature and film: Sam Diamond (parody of Sam Spade and Nick Charles), Milo Perrier (parody of Hercule Poirot), Jessica Marbles (parody of Miss Marple), Sidney Wang (parody of Charlie Chan), and Dick and Dora Charleston (parody of The Thin Man).
During dinner, Twain announces that he is going to commit a murder at midnight and challenges the detectives to solve it. The detectives agree, and the evening becomes a series of comical mishaps and misadventures as they try to outdo each other in solving the crime.
As the evening progresses, the guests are threatened with various dangers, including ghosts, guns, and knives, and the plot twists become increasingly convoluted. The blind butler and deaf-mute maid add to the confusion, and the guests even switch identities in an attempt to outsmart each other.
Ultimately, the detectives find that the crime was not what they thought it was, and they are left to solve the real mystery. The ending of the movie is a surprise twist that mocks the clichés of detective fiction.
