Struggle in the Southern Wilderness: A Family's Fight

Drama  United States of America

Mudbound is a 2017 American historical drama film directed by Dee Rees. The film is based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Hillary Jordan. The movie tells the story of two families, the McAllans and the Jacksons, who are forced to confront the brutalities of racism and poverty in the Mississippi Delta during the 1940s.

The McAllans are a white family who move to a farm in the Mississippi Delta, where they struggle to make a living from the land. The Jacksons are a black family who work as sharecroppers on the McAllan's farm. Despite their different backgrounds, the two families become intertwined and must work together to survive the harsh conditions of rural Mississippi.

As the film unfolds, the families are confronted with numerous challenges, including the return of two soldiers from World War II, one from each family, who find it difficult to adjust to life at home after the horrors of war. They are also forced to confront the racism that divides them, as black families are subject to violence, discrimination, and economic exploitation.

Mudbound poignantly depicts the hardship, pain, and struggle that both black and white families experience in trying to make a living from the land, and the deep-seated racism that plagues American society. The film was highly praised for its performances, cinematography, and direction. It received four nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.
