MS Slavic 7

Drama  Canada

MS Slavic 7 is a 2019 Canadian drama film directed by Sofia Bohdanowicz and Deragh Campbell. The film follows a young woman named Audrey (played by Deragh Campbell) who works as a graduate assistant at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. Audrey discovers a collection of letters written in Polish by her great-grandmother, Zofia Bohdanowiczowa, a poet from Poland who settled in Montreal after World War II. The letters were written to her fellow poet and friend Jozef Wittlin.

As Audrey translates the letters into English, she learns about her great-grandmother's life and career, and begins to understand her family's cultural heritage and the struggles faced by women writers in the 20th century. The film is a meditation on language, family, identity and the importance of cultural heritage.

Throughout the film, Audrey navigates her own life in parallel to her great-grandmother's, also grappling with her own experiences and challenges. The film is shot in a minimalist style, using long takes and simple compositions to draw attention to the emotional depth of the story. MS Slavic 7 premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and has received acclaim for its exploration of intergenerational connections and artistic legacy.
