Mrs Brown is a 1997 historical drama film directed by John Madden and stars Judi Dench as Queen Victoria and Billy Connolly as John Brown, her loyal and unconventional servant.

The film is set in the late 1860s, after the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband. Deeply grieving and consumed with loneliness, the queen has withdrawn from public life and is unable to fulfill her duties as monarch. Enter John Brown, a Scottish Highlander and former servant of Prince Albert who has been working on the royal estates.

Despite initial resistance, Queen Victoria forms a deep friendship with Brown, who brings her out of her reclusive state with his blunt humor, steady companionship, and unconventional manner. They are seen frequently walking and talking together, both enjoying each other's company immensely.

However, their close relationship draws the ire and suspicion of the Queen's court and Prime Minister, as well as her son and heir apparent, Prince Albert Edward, who fear Brown's influence on the Queen might have political repercussions. They all try to undermine Brown's influence over the Queen, but she fiercely defends him and his loyalty, causing a scandal that threatens to bring down the monarchy.

Throughout the film, there are several hints of romantic feelings between the Queen and Brown, though the nature of their relationship remains ambiguous. As the Queen herself admits, Brown "gives her the essence of life," but their unconventional closeness puts both of them in danger.

Mrs Brown is a poignant portrayal of Queen Victoria's grief and isolation after her beloved husband's death, as well as a powerful exploration of the strength and loyalty of an extraordinary friendship.
