Jefferson Smith is a young and idealistic leader of a Boy Rangers organization in his state. After the sudden death of a senator, the governor chooses Smith as the replacement. Smith is thrilled to go to Washington and work for the people of his state. Upon arriving, he is swarmed by the press, who initially mock him for his lack of political experience.
Once in the Senate, Smith quickly learns the ins and outs of politics. His main goal is to build a national boys' camp, a project he promises the boys in his state. However, he discovers that the political process is much more complex and corrupt than he ever imagined. Smith is shocked by the bribery, intimidation and deceit that lies at the heart of American politics.
