Tom Popper is a divorced businessman who works as a real estate developer in New York City. He is a workaholic and has little time for his family, including his two children, who live with their mother in Boston.
One day, Tom receives a surprise package from his late father, an absent traveling salesman who never had much time for his son. Inside the package are six Gentoo penguins, who Tom decides to keep in his apartment.
At first, Tom struggles to take care of the penguins and keep them hidden from his nosy neighbor, Miss Van Gundy (played by Angela Lansbury). However, he soon learns to bond with the penguins and takes them on adventures around the city, including ice-skating in Central Park and visiting a Guggenheim exhibition.
As Tom spends more time with the penguins, he begins to value his family more and rekindles his relationship with his ex-wife Amanda (played by Carla Gugino). Tom also clashes with his boss, who wants to demolish Tavern on the Green, a famous Central Park restaurant where the penguins reside.
In the end, Tom learns some important life lessons from the penguins and decides to let them live in a natural habitat in Antarctica. He also reconciles with his family and chooses to focus on the important things in life rather than his career.
