Mr. North is a 1988 American comedy-drama film directed by Danny Huston and starring Anthony Edwards, Robert Mitchum, and Lauren Bacall.
The story follows the arrival of Mr. North, a young man who has inherited a large sum of money, in a small Rhode Island town in the summer of 1926. North quickly becomes the center of attention when he is believed to possess the power to heal people's ailments with a touch of his hand.
The rumor spreads quickly throughout the town, and soon North finds himself inundated with requests from people desperate for a cure. However, North insists that he is not a doctor and refuses to take any payment for his services.
North becomes acquainted with a number of locals, including a wealthy widow, Mrs. Cranston (Bacall), and her eccentric son, Thornton (Harry Dean Stanton), who takes a liking to North and becomes his loyal sidekick.
North also meets a young woman, Persis (Mary Stuart Masterson), who is involved in a complicated love triangle with two local boys. North helps the trio navigate their relationships and eventually everyone in town becomes involved in a complex scheme to ensure North's financial security.
As North's increasingly bizarre behavior attract more attention, a team of scientists arrives in town to investigate his alleged healing abilities. Their investigation leads to a surprising conclusion, and the townspeople must decide how to respond to the truth about Mr. North.
The film received mixed reviews upon its release, but is now considered a cult classic. It is notable for its all-star cast, which also includes Virginia Madsen, Anjelica Huston, and David Warner.
