In the film, Cary Grant plays Jim Blandings, a successful advertising executive living in a cramped New York City apartment with his wife Muriel (Myrna Loy) and their two children. Tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, Jim dreams of moving his family to the country and building a spacious, modern home.
With the help of an enthusiastic real estate agent, Jim finds a beautiful piece of land in the Connecticut countryside and sets about designing his dream house. However, he soon discovers that building a house is much more complicated than he had anticipated. From dealing with eccentric architects and contractors to navigating a series of unexpected setbacks, Jim finds himself embroiled in a seemingly endless series of challenges that threaten to derail his dream.
