A Day of Forbidden Love

Romance,Drama  United Kingdom

The movie Mothering Sunday is based on the novel of the same name by Graham Swift. Set in post-World War I England, it explores the class and gender divides of the time and the lingering effects of the war.

Jane Fairchild, played by Odessa Young, is a young woman with a passion for writing. She has been in a secret relationship with Paul Sheringham, played by Josh O'Connor, for almost seven years. Paul is engaged to Emma Hobday, played by Emma D'Arcy, and their engagement lunch is being held at the neighboring estate.

As Jane spends her day off exploring the countryside, memories and reflections on her past and her relationship with Paul come flooding back. She reflects on her freedom, her lowly station in life, and the limitations of her social class. Meanwhile, Paul struggles with the impending end of their relationship and the societal expectations placed upon him as a member of the aristocracy.

Throughout the course of the day, Jane and Paul have their final tryst in his bedroom, their last moment of closeness before their worlds will inevitably drift apart. Jane's experience with Paul has given her a newfound sense of identity and agency, which she begins to explore through her writing.

Mothering Sunday is a poignant and sensual exploration of love and loss, class and gender, and the lingering effects of war on a generation. The film is directed by Eva Husson and also stars Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, and Sope Dirisu.
