The movie Mortal Engines is a post-apocalyptic science fiction adventure based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve. It takes place in a distant future where civilization has been destroyed by a catastrophic event called the Sixty Minute War, leaving only a few remaining cities on earth. These cities are now mobile and roam the land on giant wheels, hunting smaller towns for resources to survive.
The story follows Tom Natsworthy, a young apprentice Historian from London, one of the largest and most powerful traction cities. Tom is thrown off the city and left to fend for himself in the wasteland after a failed assassination attempt. It is here that he meets Hester Shaw, a young woman who seeks revenge against Thaddeus Valentine, the man who killed her mother and scarred her face.
Together, Tom and Hester embark on a journey to stop Valentine's plans to use an ancient weapon called MEDUSA, which will destroy the remaining towns and consolidate power for London. Along the way, they encounter Anna Fang, a fierce resistance fighter, and Shrike, an undead assassin who was once Hester's guardian.
As the fate of the remaining cities hangs in the balance, Tom and Hester must discover the truth about MEDUSA and confront their pasts to save the future of mankind.
Mortal Engines features a talented cast including Hera Hilmar as Hester Shaw, Robert Sheehan as Tom Natsworthy, Hugo Weaving as Thaddeus Valentine, Jihae as Anna Fang, and Stephen Lang as Shrike. The film was produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Christian Rivers, with a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson.
