Moonrise Kingdom is a coming-of-age story about two young lovers, Sam and Suzy, who decide to leave their everyday lives behind and run away to create their own adventure. Sam is an orphan who lives with the Khaki Scouts, a boy scout troop led by Scout Master Ward who doesn't believe in Sam's abilities as a scout. Suzy is a lonely and misunderstood young girl who is constantly at odds with her parents, especially her mother, who is having an affair with the local police captain, Captain Sharp.
After meeting at a church play, Sam and Suzy develop a deep connection and begin to correspond by letter. They make a secret pact to run away together and live in the wilderness, creating their own kingdom. They escape into the woods and set up camp, using Sam's expertise as a scout to survive. Meanwhile, the Khaki Scouts and several other concerned adults, including Captain Sharp and Suzy's parents, begin to search for them.
As the search intensifies, a violent storm begins to brew off the coast, threatening the safety of everyone on the island. The tension between the adults and the children reaches a boiling point, and it becomes clear that no one is prepared for what will happen next.
