Moonraker is the eleventh installment in the James Bond franchise and was released in 1979. It stars Roger Moore as James Bond and features Michael Lonsdale as the villainous Hugo Drax. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, however, the plot deviates significantly from the book.
The movie begins with the hijacking of a space shuttle called Moonraker. James Bond is sent to investigate and after surviving an attempt on his life, he travels to California where he meets Hugo Drax, the owner of the company that built the shuttle. Bond discovers that Drax is planning to create a master race of humans who will repopulate the Earth after he destroys everyone else using a deadly toxin.
To achieve this, Drax has built a massive space station, where he plans to launch poisonous globes to destroy all life on Earth. Bond teams up with Dr. Holly Goodhead, a scientist working for Drax, to stop him.
The movie takes Bond on a wild and colorful journey through various locations, including Venice, Rio de Janeiro, and the Amazon rainforest. Bond also gets to go into space, where he engages in an epic battle with Drax's henchmen, including the steel-toothed Jaws.
Moonraker was a huge commercial success for the Bond franchise and is known for its over-the-top action sequences and campy humor. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of 1979.
