Sam Bell is a miner who is employed by Lunar Industries to mine Helium-3 on the moon. He is nearing the end of his three-year contract and is getting anxious to return home to his wife and children. He spends his days in isolation, working long hours at the mining facility and communicating with his wife through recorded messages.
GERTY, the facility's computer system, is his only companion on the moon. GERTY is programmed to assist Sam with his work and take care of his needs. GERTY communicates with Sam through his computer and is always there to help him.
One day, while working on the lunar surface, Sam has an accident and wakes up in the base's infirmary. He soon realizes that he is not alone - there is another Sam Bell in the base. The other Sam Bell claims to be a clone of the original Sam Bell and was created as part of Lunar Industries' cost-cutting measures.
