Monsters University is a prequel to the Pixar classic Monsters Inc., which focuses on the early days of Mike and Sulley's relationship. The film chronicles their initial rivalry, meeting at Monsters University where they both enrolled in the Scare Program.
Mike is an ambitious and studious monster who dreams of becoming a top scarer, however, he lacks the natural scare talent Sulley possesses. Sulley on the other hand, is a natural-born scarer, with a confident and carefree personality, yet he lacks the book smarts of Mike. Both characters clash repeatedly, with Sulley feeling that he is entitled to success based on his familial heritage, whilst Mike believes that hard work and dedication is the key to success.
As the story unfolds, Mike and Sulley form an unlikely bond when an unfortunate turn of events forces them to work together to qualify for the Scare Program. The pair quickly realizes that they complement each other's weaknesses and strengths, and they start to work together as a team, forming a deep friendship.
Throughout the film, we witness the growth of their relationship, with the two characters guiding and learning from one another, eventually learning to accept each other's differences. The ending of the film sees the pair ultimately succeed in their goal of becoming scarers and showcasing the importance of teamwork and friendship.
