Jasmin Grant, a successful lawyer, returns to her hometown to attend her father's funeral. However, she soon discovers that her father, Raymond Grant, was not the victim of a heart attack as claimed by the coroner's report. She begins to suspect foul play and decides to investigate.
Jasmin learns that her father was working on his latest horror novel, Monsters in the Closet, before his death. She also discovers that he had been using black magic to give his writing the authenticity he thought it needed. He had made a deal with a demon, who gave him the power to bring his grotesque characters to life.
When Jasmin listens to the audio book of Monsters in the Closet, she inadvertently unleashes the horrors that her father had created. Her childhood home, a sprawling mansion, becomes overrun with monsters, zombies, and other terrifying creatures. Jasmin, along with her childhood friend and her father's agent, must band together to survive the night and stop the monsters from escaping into the world.
As they explore the mansion's dark corners and hidden rooms, they uncover clues about Raymond's true motives for his writing. They learn that he had made a pact with the demon to help him write his book, but the demon had other plans in mind.
