Monsieur Lazhar

Drama,Comedy  Canada

Monsieur Lazhar is a Canadian drama film directed by Philippe Falardeau. The film is based on a play called "Bashir Lazhar," written by Évelyne de la Chenelière. The film centers around Bachir Lazhar, a former Algerian school teacher who emigrates to Canada and becomes a substitute teacher at a Montreal elementary school. He is assigned to a grade six class who have recently lost their former teacher, Martine Lachance, who committed suicide in the classroom. Bachir must help the students cope with their loss while dealing with his own personal demons and past traumas.

Throughout the film, the children struggle to come to terms with their teacher's death. They feel guilty for not noticing Martine's troubles and blame themselves for her death. Bachir tries to help them work through their grief by encouraging them to express themselves creatively and openly. He also teaches them about literature, poetry, and French grammar, hoping to inspire them to think independently and critically.

Meanwhile, Bachir is struggling with his own personal and legal issues. He is an undocumented refugee from Algeria, seeking political asylum in Canada after enduring great loss in his own life. Despite knowing that he could be sent back to Algeria at any time, Bachir commits himself to teaching the children and helping them heal. However, his presence is met with resistance from some of the parents and school officials who question his methods and his immigration status.

As the school year progresses, Bachir's bond with the children grows stronger, and they begin to see him not just as a substitute teacher but as a mentor and a friend. However, as the truth about Bachir's past is revealed, he is forced to confront his own pain and trauma, and the children realize that their teacher has been struggling with his own demons as well.

Monsieur Lazhar is a poignant and insightful film about grief, trauma, and the power of human connection. It is a reminder of the importance of compassion and understanding, especially in the face of adversity. The film was critically acclaimed and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012.
