Monos is a 2019 Colombian war drama film directed by Alejandro Landes. It centers around a group of eight teenage guerrilla fighters, known as the "Monos", who are part of a rebel organization in an unidentified country. The group is tasked with guarding an American hostage, Doctora (played by Julianne Nicholson), who they have been ordered to keep alive and ransom off to her family.
The Monos live on a remote mountaintop, where they are isolated from the outside world. They spend their days training, carrying out military exercises, and performing rituals led by their leader, Wolf. Each of the Monos is assigned a code name, such as Rambo, Swede, and Bigfoot.
One day, the Monos receive a new mission - to take care of a milk cow called Shakira, which has been conscripted by the rebel organization. The cow is to be kept safe until it is needed for a future mission.
As the days go by, tensions rise among the Monos. They are left to their own devices and begin to act out in violent and unpredictable ways. Doctora, who is initially afraid of her captors, begins to form a bond with one of the Monos, Rambo, who takes care of her and protects her from the other members.
The situation on the mountaintop takes a turn for the worse when the Monos are ordered to move to a new location. With their cover blown and their lives in danger, the group must fight for survival in a world that has abandoned them.
Monos is a visually stunning and intense film, which explores themes of power, loyalty, and the consequences of war. It received critical acclaim and was selected as the Colombian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
