Monkeybone is a 2001 live-action/animated dark fantasy comedy film directed by Henry Selick and written by Sam Hamm based on the comic book series Dark Town by Kaja Blackley. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg along with voice actors John Turturro, Dave Foley, and Rose McGowan.

The story follows Stu Miley, a successful cartoonist who creates a cartoon character named Monkeybone. After a car accident sends him into a coma, Stu finds himself trapped in a surreal world called "Downtown" where all the residents are figures from his subconscious mind. His only hope of returning to the real world and his beloved girlfriend Julie (Fonda) lies in finding the mythical goddess Anjeliki (Goldberg) who resides in Downtown.

However, things take a dark turn when Monkeybone (voiced by Turturro) takes over Stu's body and escapes into the real world, wreaking havoc and causing chaos in his wake. Stu must then team up with the catwoman kitty (McGowan) and other characters from Downtown to track down Monkeybone and stop him before it's too late.

The film features a blend of live-action and stop-motion animation, with Selick's signature style on full display in the surreal and fantastical world of Downtown. Monkeybone received mixed reviews from critics upon its release, with some praising its visual effects and offbeat humor, while others found it confusing and too dark for a family-friendly film. Despite its mixed reception, the film has gained a cult following over the years for its distinct style and imaginative world-building.
