Barnaby Fulton, a research chemist for the Oxly Chemical Company, is frustrated by his lack of success in developing a youth-restoring formula. He becomes distracted by his beautiful secretary, Lois Laurel, and by the antics of a lab monkey named Esther. One day, Esther accidentally creates a concoction by mixing together several chemicals, which she then dumps into the water cooler.
Fulton unwittingly drinks the contaminated water and begins to exhibit strange behavior. He becomes impulsive, carefree, and giddy, as though he were in his early twenties. Convinced that he has found the key to eternal youth, Fulton takes more of the potion and begins to act even more childishly. He steals a motorcycle, plays hooky from work, and generally makes a nuisance of himself.
Fulton's wife Edwina, who is his partner at the company, also drinks from the water cooler and begins acting like a young girl. She flirts with the company president and engages in reckless behavior. Meanwhile, the company's board of directors is growing impatient with Fulton's lack of progress on the youth formula and threatens to shut down his research.
Eventually, Fulton and Edwina come to their senses and realize that the fountain of youth is not in a pill or potion, but in the joy and spontaneity of youth itself. They reconcile and vow to live life to the fullest, even as they resume their work on the youth formula.
