Moll Flanders is a 1996 British-American period drama film directed by Pen Densham and based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Defoe. The film stars Robin Wright as Moll Flanders, Morgan Freeman as Hibble, and Stockard Channing as Mrs. Allworthy.
The film begins with the execution of Moll's mother, who was a thief. Moll is then sent to a nunnery, where she is raised by the nuns. As a teenager, she rebels against the abusive priest who runs the nunnery and escapes to London.
In London, Moll meets Mrs. Allworthy, who takes her in and gives her a job as a prostitute. Moll becomes close with Hibble, who is Mrs. Allworthy's servant and takes a liking to Moll.
Throughout the film, Moll faces numerous hardships, including being sent to jail for stealing and having a child out of wedlock. However, she never loses hope and continues to strive for a better life for herself.
She eventually meets an artist named Jemmy (played by John Lynch), who falls in love with her and promises to marry her. However, Moll's past catches up with her, and she is arrested for her previous crimes.
In the end, Moll is sentenced to be transported to the American colonies, but Jemmy persuades the governor to pardon her and allow them to marry. Moll and Jemmy sail off into the sunset, hopeful for a better future together.
The film explores themes of social class, poverty, and the struggle for women in 18th-century England. It also showcases strong performances from its lead actors and beautiful costume and set design.
