Miss Bala is a 2019 action thriller film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The movie is a remake of the 2011 Mexican film of the same name, and stars Gina Rodriguez as Gloria, a young woman who accidentally wanders into the dangerous world of drug cartels and human trafficking when she visits her best friend in Tijuana, Mexico.
Gloria is a makeup artist from Los Angeles who dreams of competing in the Miss Baja California beauty pageant. She travels to Tijuana to help her friend Suzu (Cristina Rodlo) prepare for the contest but finds herself caught in the middle of a violent shootout at a nightclub. When Suzu goes missing after the incident, Gloria is forced to put her own life on the line to try and rescue her.
Gloria is kidnapped by a powerful drug lord named Lino (Ismael Cruz Cordova), who wants her to use her beauty pageant connections to help smuggle drugs across the border. Over time, Gloria is drawn deeper and deeper into a web of corruption and violence, struggling to survive against the odds and protect herself and her friend from harm.
As the story unfolds, Gloria must use all of her wits and resourcefulness to stay alive in a world where trust is in short supply and danger lurks around every corner. The film is a tension-filled thriller that showcases Rodriguez's acting talents and highlights the harsh realities faced by those caught up in the dark underbelly of the criminal underworld.
