In the film Mirrors, the ex-cop in question is Ben Carson (played by Kiefer Sutherland), who is struggling with personal demons and alcohol addiction. He takes a job as a night security guard at an abandoned department store that was destroyed by fire, which also claimed the lives of the employees who were inside.
