MirrorMask is a 2005 British-American dark fantasy film directed by Dave McKean and written by Neil Gaiman. It follows the story of 15-year-old Helena, who works in her family's circus where she dreams of a different life. Helena suddenly finds herself in a strange fantasy world after her mother falls into a coma. She enters a world divided into two kingdoms, the bright and colorful Light Kingdom and the dark and ominous Shadow Kingdom.
The Queen of Light, whose face is plastered on posters all around the circus she works in, has fallen gravely ill. The daughter of the Queen of Shadows, Valentine, has stolen a powerful charm from the Light Kingdom called the MirrorMask, which is said to have the power to grant wishes. However, in reality, it has the power to destroy the balance between the Light and Shadow kingdoms. When Valentine's actions cause the Queen of Light to worsen, Helena sets out on a quest to retrieve the MirrorMask and save the kingdom.
Helena meets strange characters and is chased by shadow creatures as she journeys through the fantastical world, with the help of a kind-hearted juggler named Valentine. The pair's journey takes them through surreal locations and dreamlike encounters, as they journey to the City of Light to retrieve the MirrorMask from Valentine's wicked mother.
In the end, Helena succeeds in her mission, saves the queen, and restores balance to the Light and Shadow kingdoms. She returns home to her mother who wakes up from her coma, having experienced the same fantastical adventure in her own mind. The movie is a visual feast and showcases the incredible imagination of the directors and writers. It was met with critical acclaim for its stunning visuals, story, and score.
