Minyan

Drama  United States of America

Minyan is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Eric Steel, based on the novel of the same name by David Bezmozgis. Set in Brooklyn, New York in the 1980s, the film follows the story of David, a Russian Jewish teenager who moves to New York City with his parents.

David is struggling to find his place in a new country and is also grappling with his identity, faith, and sexuality. His parents are devout Jews, and David attends a yeshiva, where he feels out of place. He also realizes that he is attracted to men, which conflicts with his religious beliefs.

Despite his inner turmoil, David befriends a group of older men who live in his grandfather's senior housing complex. They are all closeted gay men who share their experiences and struggles with David. As David becomes more immersed in their world, he begins to question everything he thought he knew about himself and his faith.

The film explores themes of identity, religion, sexuality, and acceptance. It stars Samuel H. Levine as David, Alexandra Turshen and Ronald Guttman as David's parents, and Christopher McCann, Mark Margolis, and Lee Wilkof as the older gay men.

Minyan premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020 and has received critical acclaim. It was praised for its sensitive portrayal of complex themes and for its strong performances. The film is a poignant and powerful coming-of-age story that will resonate with audiences of all ages.
