Minamata is a 2020 drama film directed by Andrew Levitas, based on the true story of the American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith's efforts to expose the devastating effects of Minamata Disease in Japan. The film stars Johnny Depp as Smith, alongside Minami and Hiroyuki Sanada.
Set in the early 1970s, the film follows Smith as he travels back to Japan after several years to document the impact of Minamata Disease, a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. The disease had affected thousands of people in the coastal communities of Minamata and Niigata, with symptoms including tremors, paralysis, and loss of vision and hearing.
