The Pursuit of Independence and Approval

Crime,Drama  United States of America

Mildred Pierce is a 1945 film noir drama directed by Michael Curtiz, based on the novel of the same name by James M. Cain. The film stars Joan Crawford in the title role, alongside Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, and Ann Blyth.

The story takes place during the Great Depression, where Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) is left to fend for herself and her two daughters after her unfaithful husband Bert (Bruce Bennett) leaves her. She decides to start her own business by opening a restaurant, which becomes highly successful. However, her older daughter Veda (Ann Blyth) looks down upon Mildred's hard work and becomes increasingly spoiled and manipulative.

As Mildred's wealth and success grow, she becomes enamored with the idea of giving Veda everything she wants, even at the cost of her own happiness. She spoils Veda with expensive clothes, jewelry, and piano lessons, all in an effort to gain her approval.

As the story unfolds, Mildred's relationships with the men in her life become more complicated, particularly with the charming but devious Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) and her long-time friend and confidant Wally Fay (Jack Carson). Meanwhile, Veda becomes more and more distant and cruel, pushing her mother to the brink of despair.

In the end, Mildred must make a choice about what is most important to her: her own happiness or the approval of her daughter. The film is known for its stylized visuals and strong performances, particularly Crawford's portrayal of Mildred Pierce. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won one for Best Supporting Actress for Eve Arden's performance as Mildred's friend and business partner, Ida.
